I paint as a way to learn about myself; particularly, the things that I hide from my conscious self. Through this process, I capture what is most familiar to me: duality, contradiction and ambivalence.
My life is a ride on a pendulum, swinging between polar opposites. I simultaneously stand on two opposing sides, struggling together at the same moment. It is this moment of black and white, pleasure and pain, human and nature, that I know best and that I paint most.
I create paintings by combining methods from the baroque and neo-classical periods with modern subject matter to produce paintings that lie somewhere between surrealism and photo-realism. I refer to my work as subtle surrealism. My imagination allows me to build or manipulate the world in any way I want, and I don't take that for granted. My paintings are visual representations of dreams I never had.
I use pure and saturated colors in my paintings for a very simple reason, I'm colorblind. I can't see or match color the way most people can. I therefore have to mix a palette in a way that differs greatly from the average artist, and (when I don't have help) paint without knowing how accurate my colors are. This isn't necessarily a handicap. In fact, I think it adds a lot of versatility, originality and a unique cleanness to my paintings.
~ Matthew Rucker
Matthew S. Rucker was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His artistic talents were noticed at a very young age by his grandfather - a master woodcarver. With his grandfather's encouragement, art education and materials became a staple part of Matthew's upbringing.
Matthew began painting seriously at the age of 19, and quickly realized that he had unconsciously made his career choice. Shortly thereafter he attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a scholarship for artistic and academic excellence. Unsatisfied with the education he was receiving, he left Chicago and returned to Minnesota to begin his career as a self-taught artist. Matthew submerged himself in the arts, painting voraciously, participating in numerous exhibitions and working in other arts related fields including: interior design, fashion design and mural painting. He left Minnesota in 1995 and spent many years living in and displaying his art in several cities from coast to coast.
Matthew now lives and paints full time in St. Paul, Minnesota. He has won numerous awards and honors and his work can be found in collections worldwide.
